About Boating Safely

Annually, on April 19th

In this beginner boating class you will gain the basic knowledge to safely trailer, navigate, and operate a small vessel. This class will give you all the information needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification that many states are beginning to require. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete About Boating Safely.




Topics Include:

Introduction to Boating- Types of power boats; sailboats; outboards; different uses of boats, and family boating basics.

Boating Law- Boat registration, boating regulations, hull identification number, required boat safety equipment; operating safely, Federal law, state boating laws.

Boat Safety Equipment- Personal flotation devices, visual-distress signals; dock lines, anchors and anchoring techniques.

Navigation-The U.S. Aids to Navigation system; types of buoys and beacons; navigation rules; right-of-way; avoiding collisions

Boating Problems- Hypothermia; boating accidents and rescues; man overboard recovery; running aground; radio calls; equipment failures

Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your Boat- Types of trailers; towing a trailer; boat launching procedures

This course is offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from April 19 through April 28, 2016 from 6-8pm
