Join Maine Maritime Museum in welcoming the 177-foot wooden barkentine Gazela Primeiro to our docks and enjoy a rare opportunity to step aboard a historic vessel. Gazela Primeiro is believed to be the oldest wooden square-rigged sailing vessel in the United States, still actively sailing. Originally built in 1901 at the shipyard of J. M. Mendes in Setubal, Portugal she crossed the Atlantic Ocean each summer until 1969 with the Portuguese White Fleet to fish for cod on the Grand Banks, using one-man dories. Gazela Primeiro has also been featured in several movies, including: Interview with the Vampire and The Widow of St. Pierre.
