Workshop Beginner Blacksmithing

Maine Maritime Museum and the New England School of Metalwork in Auburn Maine join forces to bring you this introduction to blacksmithing workshop. The goal of this class is to familiarize the student with the tools and techniques that are employed by the blacksmith. Beginning with a tour of the shop and discussion of the tools of a blacksmith and their uses, including coal and gas forges and there operation. 

 

The focus of this course is on the proper use of the hammer and anvil and developing good habits that will aid in productivity.  Students will learn to forge tapers, upsets, shaping, and top tool work such as splitting and punching.  Each of these skills will be applied to specific projects. We will be focusing on the process, not the project, we will take time to diagnose our mistakes and understand how to overcome them as they arise. Come ready to learn and leave with an understanding of the skills you will need to do the work of the blacksmith.

This course has an additional material fee of approximatly $30.00.
