Author Larry Berman will join Maine Maritime Museum as we celebrate the christening of DDG 1000 Zumwalt with a lecture and book signing.  Larry will discuss the life and times of Admiral Elmo Russell Zumwalt and give insight to the character of the man who modernized the Navy.

Admiral Elmo Russel “Bud” Zumwalt, Jr. is the namesake of the Zumwalt-class destroyers, a class of U.S. Navy destroyers currently being built at Bath Iron Works and among the most technologically advanced warships in the world. The class is designed to require a smaller crew and be less expensive to operate than comparable warships. The lead ship will be named Zumwalt for Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, and carries the hull number DDG-1000.

Zumwalt successfully enacted radical change within the Navy.  His fight to modernize a technologically obsolete fleet pitted him against such formidable adversaries as Henry Kissinger and Hyman Rickover. Ultimately, Zumwalt created a more egalitarian Navy as well as a smaller and modernized fleet better prepared to cope with a changing world—a policy that has helped keep the Navy a modern and relevant fighting force.

Author Larry Berman has been featured on C-SPAN Book TV, Bill Moyers’ The Public Mind and David McCullough’s American Experience. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow in residence at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He received the Bernath Lecture Prize for contributions to our understanding of foreign relations and the Department of the Navy Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper Research Grant. Berman is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis and Founding Dean of the Honors College at Georgia State University.
