ALOFT! Topsails to Turbines

New technologies, materials and designs are evolving to once again harness the most abundant of resources - wind power. This exhibit presents comparions of sail design, sail handling, rigging variants, terminology, flops and failures, as well as cameo portraits of those involved with things blowing in the wind.

Mainers have been working the wind for hundreds of years. The coast of Maine became renowned worldwide for launching thousands of masterfully built, elegantly modeled, and profitably managed sailing ships that carried the cargoes of nations around the world.
