Subdue, Seize and Take: Maritime Maine in the Unwelcome Interruption of the War of 1812

May 26, 2012 to Oct. 12, 2012
Subdue, Seize and Take will chronicle the maritime world of the District of Maine (pre-1820 statehood) in the fractious atmosphere of double-dealing, defiance, subterfuge, vitriolic satire, confusion, and propaganda that the 1812 War brought to our coast.
From the Eastport ‘Flour War’ and the sacking of Hampden to the alarming ‘frolics’ of the Royal Navy threatening the partially-built USS Washington at Kittery, this war in Maine was above all waged passionately, and is due all the appreciation that its bi-centennial demands.
