Kennebec Explorers Camp Director
Maine Maritime Museum (MMM), an internationally recognized cultural institution located on the Kennebec River in Bath is seeking a Camp Director for our Kennebec Explorers Day Camp. This is a full-time, seasonal, non-exempt position, with a pay rate of $17.50/per hour.
Position Summary
The Kennebec Explorers Camp Director supports the mission and goals of Maine Maritime Museum by giving top priority to safety, teamwork, and education in the direction of Kennebec Explorers Day Camp. Under the direct supervision of the Museum Educator, the Camp Director oversees camp staff in all activities and is responsible for developing and delivering environmentally-focused recreational programs and activities, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of campers, managing camp staff roles and responsibilities, planning and leading off-site trips, and coordinating early drop-off and late pick-up. The Camp Director models appropriate and positive behavior to campers and manages a team of counselors to do the same.
Specific Duties
- Ensure a safe, friendly, and educationally engaging environment for campers, grades 2-5
- Work with Museum Educator to plan and lead camp counselor trainings, beginning the week of 6/20
- Direct camp staff in developing daily and weekly schedule of activities
- Lead, delegate, and assist with educational programs and activities ensuring the timely, focused, and effective transition of campers from one activity and location to another
- Direct off-site excursions, including working with vendors, billing, and transportation
- Supervise and assist camp staff in their daily lessons and activities and provide assistance as needed
- Ensure counselors are continuing to deliver quality and creative programming
- Supervise and assist in the preparation of materials, crafts, and games for camp programs
- Order and maintain inventory of camp supplies in a timely fashion; monitor camp budget
- Organize and maintain counselor working schedules; including rotating early/late care duty
- Meet regularly with Museum Educator to review parent evaluations and implement improvements and identify successes
- Ensure all safety protocols are being followed by counselors and campers, on and off the museum campus, and oversee the completion of injury reports
- Identify and support campers who require special attention; establish action plans with other staff to ensure a positive experience for all campers
- Serve as primary communicator to parents about camper needs; make plans to accommodate needs, including schedule adaptations, behavioral challenges, and allergies
- Prepare and review camper information packets and weekly attendance sheets
- Administer, review, and act upon weekly parent evaluations
- Be on campus to supervise either early drop-off or late pick-up of campers; delegate as needed
- Help keep camp facilities clean and presentable to museum guests; communicate infrastructure needs and relevant camper events to maintenance staff as needed
- Maintain current First Aid/CPR certification
- Employment duration: approximately June 20- August 19, 2022; with unpaid break July 4-July 8
- Typical Shift: Rotating shifts of 8am-4pm or 9:30am-5:30pm, Monday-Friday
- Other duties and responsibilities as required
Qualifications
- At least 3-5 years of experience serving a supervisory role in youth camps/programs, K-5 educator, or other relevant or equivalent experience
- Creativity and enthusiasm in delivering unique experiences for curious minds on and off the museum campus
- Clear and effective communicator, verbal and written, with a diverse group of people
- Thrives off of high-energy, fast-paced environments; ability to multi-task efficiently
- Interest in environmental studies and education; experience preferred
- Experience in elementary education preferred, but not required
- First Aid/CPR certification (MMM will provide training)
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk over irregular terrain and lift 35 lbs.
