From shipwrecks and piracy to foreign ports and the wide open sea, the experiences of those who lived aboard sailing vessels have inspired some of the best fiction in American history. In this two-hour workshop we will look closely at a selection of ship logs and sailors’ journals from Maine Maritime Museum’s collection, using our imaginations to give these first-hand accounts new life. Coupled with the backdrop of the historic shipyard and the remnants of the clipper ship, Snow Squall, these journals will inspire children and adults alike to create a piece of writing based on maritime journeys long ago. Participants will have the opportunity to share their writing with the group in a positive workshop setting. All ages are welcome–content level is appropriate for ages 5+.
Space is limited to 16 participants. Preregistration is advised to guarantee availability. Masks are required for everyone 5 years and older, and strongly encouraged for ages 2-4. Tickets include museum admission.
STEAMbox Family Workshops are designed to integrate STEM and creative arts skills into a cohesive and hands-on learning experience.
