Crosscurrents: Youth Learning & Leadership Program
July 12 @ 9:00 am - July 30 @ 2:30 pm
Crosscurrents is a three-week enrichment day program designed for rising 7th and 8th graders who have a curiosity for creative thinking and a drive to ask interesting questions about the world around them. The cultural and environmental history of the Kennebec River will serve as a central theme for this interdisciplinary and hands-on experience, which integrates the arts, maritime history, science, and traditional skills. The museum’s unique resources will inspire students to look closer, think deeper, and make interesting connections between past and present. Participants will explore environmental sustainability and maritime literature while on board the museum’s historic schooner and cruise vessel, discover the value of traditional skills in keeping our maritime heritage alive, and examine historical artifacts up-close to uncover how our own perception of the past is shaped by the present. Informed by decades of combined teacher experience, this fun and engaging program empowers inquisitive youth to grow as confident thinkers and collaborators while exploring new skills, new ideas, and new avenues for self-expression.
