Folk Art Rug Hooking

July 18, 2020 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Like all old-fashioned crafts, rug hooking is low-tech, simple and lots of fun. Learn the sequence and procedure of rug hooking, from start to finish. Every step will be demonstrated and no previous skill is required. Rug Cooker Janet Connor will discuss the history and tradition of primitive rug hooking, finding and preparing materials, and research

Students will choose from a variety of simple folk art designed rug hooking kits, for a small mat or chair pad, purchased directly from the instructor. Each rug hooking kit will include everything needed: hook, instructions, design suggestions, binding burlap, hoop and a selection of heirloom and hand-dyed wools. If you have a favorite pair of sharp fabric scissors, please bring these to class.

There is an additional materials fee ranging from $41-$60, depending on the kit chosen. Fee is to be paid directly to instructor on the day of the workshop.

Janet Connor is an avid rug hooker who has been pulling loops since 1979. Graduating from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, she spent 30 years teaching Elementary Art in southern Maine. She now teaches rug hooking throughout the East Coast and Canada with a specific focus on art history, linking both folk and fine art. Connor also restores historic hooked rugs and has co-authored the defining history and catalogue of Hutchinson hooked rugs.

This workshop is part of the Donnell Family Forum, a series of exhibits, workshops, and lectures inspired by the lives of the Donnells, a 19th century family whose home is now a part of Maine Maritime Museum.
