Boatshop Workshop: Shaker Box Making

The Shakers are famous for their simple and elegant designs, and the Shaker oval box is no exception.  Learn boatbuilding techniques such as clinch nailing and steam bending, although no experience, boatbuilding or otherwise, is required. Each participant builds three nesting oval boxes made from cherry and cedar.  All materials are included in the class fee. This class will be offered twice in 2019: August 14 and 15, 5-8 pm, and December 4 and 5, 5-8 pm.

Boatshop Workshop: Fireside Stool Class

The fireside stool is held together with glue and wedges and is a great beginning woodworking project. It's extremely versatile for adults, children, and pets alike.  You'll find yourself using it all over the house and your friends will marvel at its artistic beauty.  No woodworking experience is necessary--over 200 have been built by our 5th to 8th-grade boatbuilding students.  Includes all materials. This class meets November 6 and 7, 2019 from 5-8 pm.

Boatshop Workshop: Toboggan-Building Class

Bring your friends for our first ever toboggan-building class!  Groups of up to five will build an 8-foot toboggan over two evenings.  Boatbuilding techniques employed in the class include steam bending, riveting and ropework.  The class runs January 22-23 to give participants time to sand and varnish before the US National Toboggan Championships in Camden February 7-9. Be sure to sign up quickly, there are only six spots available!  Class runs for two evenings, January 22 and 23, 2020 from 5-8 pm in the museum's Boatshop.

Boatshop Workshop: Building an Adirondack Chair

Join us in the historic Percy & Small Shipyard at the museum for our first-ever outdoor Adirondack chair class!  Learn to build your own Adirondack chair using durable cedar. Bring a lunch and spend the day building, then end the day enjoying the breeze off the Kennebec while you kick back in your new chair. No woodworking experience is necessary, just a willingness to work hard and a love of comfortable chairs. All materials are included.

Boatshop Workshop: Glued Lapstrake Kayak Building

Work for one week in the Boatshop to build your very own kayak! This class uses commercially-made stitch and glue kits by Chesapeake Light Craft; several styles are available. The workshop will be taught by kayak designer Eric Schade who designs boats for Chesapeake Light Craft and has taught boatbuilding classes throughout the country. Kits will be purchased separately; prices range from $700-$1500 per kit depending on the model. For more information about the class, and to discuss the models available, please email boatshop@maritimeme.org. Workshop runs Monday, August 24 through Saturday, August 29 from 8 am to 4 pm daily.

The Shakers are famous for their simple and elegant designs, and the Shaker oval box is no exception. Over two sessions in the Boatshop, you'll build a set of three nesting oval boxes using boatbuilding techniques such as clinch nailing and steam bending. No experience is required; this class is a fantastic introduction to woodworking.  Boxes are made from cherry and cedar and all materials are provided. There are two workshops scheduled:  August 12 & 13, 2020 from 1-4 pm, and December 9 & 10, 2020 from 5-8 pm.

Toboggan Building Class

This winter, join us in the Boatshop to build your own classic wooden toboggan! This class is open to groups of up to three people to allow plenty of open space for all; only three spots are available. Groups will build an 8-foot toboggan over two evenings using boatbulding techniques like steam-bending, riveting and ropework. No experience is required. Class runs for two Wednesday evenings, February 24 and March 3, from 5-8 pm in the museum's Boatshop.
