Port Pals: Family Crafts Inspired by Ports Around the World

  Looking for fun activities for kids? Fridays this summer from 10 am to 12 pm, join us for Port Pals, for a family-friendly tour of the world’s famous sea ports. Every Friday from July 10-August 14 we will feature a different port that Maine sailors visited on their journeys. Make crafts inspired by the cultures of New England, Panama, Peru, China, Indonesia, and France. Museum educators will be on hand to answer questions and provide an up-close look at objects from the museum's collection related to these places. Complete a craft and receive a stamp in your Port Pals passport! Port Pals is FREE with admission; and FREE for members. All sessions will be held outside in the museum's historic shipyard. There is a limit of four families per session and each family will have their own assigned tables and craft supplies. Tables can accommodate up to eight family members. Boatshop Workshop: Glued Lapstrake Kayak Building

Work for one week in the Boatshop to build your very own kayak! This class uses commercially-made stitch and glue kits by Chesapeake Light Craft; several styles are available. The workshop will be taught by kayak designer Eric Schade who designs boats for Chesapeake Light Craft and has taught boatbuilding classes throughout the country. Kits will be purchased separately; prices range from $700-$1500 per kit depending on the model. Stories from the Sea: Fishing Communities Revealed with Natalie Springuel

The presentation will occur remotely and be screened live in Maine Maritime Museum’s Long Reach Hall. Scattered among Maine’s coastal communities, in historical societies, museums, libraries, community radio stations and schools, the voices of Maine’s fishing community members have been recorded for posterity. These voices can illustrate the past and help us plan for the future. With ecological shifts happening today as a result of climate change and other drivers, the local fisheries knowledge contained in Maine’s rich oral history archives is a critical source of information about ecology and coastal communities. But not if the recordings are sitting on shelves collecting dust. This talk will reflect an effort to bring those stories to life. Through audio clips past and present, maps, diagrams, timelines, and photos, the project aims to highlight fishermen and community voices so they can be useful for decision-making, community development and cultural heritage. Natalie Springuel has been a marine extension associate with University of Maine Sea Grant since 2000. Based at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, her extension programs address working waterfronts and coastal access, fisheries heritage, and sustainable tourism planning. She is the coordinator of the Downeast Fisheries Trail, a founder of the National Working Waterfront Network, and host of the award winning public affairs show on WERU Community Radio called Coastal Conversations.

Cultivating Leadership on Maine’s Islands

A presentation on cultivating youth leadership in education, research and technology, through the Island Institute's Island Fellows Program. The Island Institute is a pioneer in cultivating Maine's island and coastal communities. Their initiatives in building leadership, as well as economic and environmental sustainability, bring opportunity and support to these unique cultures. Karen Burns, Chief Talent Officer, will provide insight into these island communities and the Island Institute's Island Fellows Program, which places recent college graduates in multi-year fellowships among Maine's island communities. Burns will share some inspiring stories of the program's success in cultivating youth leadership in education, research and technology. This event will be held online, via Zoom. Shibori & Indigo Dyeing, Talk and Demonstration

Kathleen Goddu, a featured artist in the Interwoven exhibit, will host a lecture and demonstration of traditional Japanese Shibori (indigo-dyed fabric) techniques and the indigo dyeing process. Goddu will introduce the cultural and economic importance of indigo to Japanese culture and textile arts that inspired beautiful textile traditions that continue to influence today’s fashions. Attendees will have the opportunity to view examples of historic Japanese textiles and Goddu’s shibori fabrics up-close. This workshop is part of the Donnell Family Forum, a series of exhibits, workshops, and lectures inspired by the lives of the Donnells, a 19th century family whose home is now a part of Maine Maritime Museum.  

New England Coast Guard Stories: Remarkable Mariners

In this online, interactive lecture, author-journalist Dyke Hendrickson presents on his book, New England Coast Guard Stories: Remarkable Mariners. A former editor and reporter with the Portland Press Herald and the Central Maine Morning Sentinel of Waterville, Mr. Hendrickson is the recipient of several writing awards. He has resided in several Maine seaside communities and although he now lives in Newburyport, MA, he is a historian with the Merrimack River Watershed Council and continues to speak, via Zoom, to clubs, associations, and historical gatherings on the history of the Coast Guard and the Merrimack River. In addition to his work in Maine, he has been a writer for the New Orleans Times-Picayune and the Boston Herald and as a contributor to USA Today, the Boston Globe and Tennis magazine. Mr. Hendrickson's book, New England Coast Guard Stories: Remarkable Mariners, is available to purchase both in the Maine Maritime Museum store or in addition to your ticket to this online presentation.

Boatshop Workshop: Shaker Box Making

The Shakers are famous for their simple and elegant designs, and the Shaker oval box is no exception. Over two sessions in the Boatshop, you'll build a set of three nesting oval boxes using boatbuilding techniques such as clinch nailing and steam bending. No experience is required; this class is a fantastic introduction to woodworking.  Boxes are made from cherry and cedar and all materials are provided. There are two workshops scheduled:  August 12 & 13, 2020 from 1-4 pm, and December 9 & 10, 2020 from 5-8 pm.

Estuary Habitats at Maine Maritime Museum

Located just downriver from the nearly 20,000-square-mile watershed of Merrymeeting Bay, Maine Maritime Museum's 20-acre campus is home to an array of animal species and their habitats. In this 90-minute program families will explore the gardens, fields, and riverbanks that comprise MMM's campus, identifying tracks, studying habitats and learning the importance of protecting Maine's diverse ecology. In this program, families will create and share their own species of animal in a fun, active and educational game. All ages are welcome--content level is appropriate for ages 3+. This program will be hosted outside on museum grounds. Please wear appropriate winter gear. Masks are required for everyone 5 years and older and strongly encouraged for those 2-4. Space is limited to 16 participants. Preregistration is advised to guarantee availability.   STEAMbox Family Workshops are designed to integrate STEM and creative arts skills into a cohesive and hands-on learning experience.

Toboggan Building Class

This winter, join us in the Boatshop to build your own classic wooden toboggan! This class is open to groups of up to three people to allow plenty of open space for all; only three spots are available. Groups will build an 8-foot toboggan over two evenings using boatbulding techniques like steam-bending, riveting and ropework. No experience is required. Class runs for two Wednesday evenings, February 24 and March 3, from 5-8 pm in the museum's Boatshop.

Sailor Souvenirs: Tides of Cultural Exchange

Sarah Timm, Manager of Interpretation at Maine Maritime Museum, will discuss objects from MMM's collection that were collected by 19th century Maine captains and crews during their stops in ports around the world during a period of rapid globalized trade. The souvenirs Maine sailors chose to bring home often tell us more about an American worldview than the cultures they are intended to represent. Explore themes of authenticity, cultural appropriation, and the effects of cultural exchange by tracing how these souvenirs transformed in meaning and function once they arrived to American shores.   Members $3; nonmembers $5 This is a Zoom event.

Looking for something to do this summer? Maine Maritime Museum is searching for new volunteers to serve fun and exciting roles for the 2021 season. With outdoor, indoor, and independent opportunities available, the museum has offerings to suit everyone’s interests. Museum staff will deliver full training courses both in-person and remotely, so there’s no prior experience necessary. Volunteering at Maine Maritime Museum is a fun way to make new friends, learn new skills, and give back to the community. This live Zoom event will offer a chance for anyone interested in volunteering to learn more about our various opportunities. SOLD OUT Build Your Own Mini Sea Chest

Ships are cramped spaces and sailors had little room to store their personal things, usually no bigger than a suitcase. This hands-on learning workshop will sharpen your family's math and creative skills. Together, families will learn about what sailors took on their long journeys and how they personalized their chests to reflect their adventures. Then families will work together to construct and decorate their own mini sea chests. All ages are welcome--content level is appropriate for ages 5+. Space is limited to 16 participants. Preregistration is advised to guarantee availability. Masks are required for everyone 5 years and older, and strongly encouraged for those aged 2-4. Tickets include museum admission. STEAMbox Family Workshops are designed to integrate STEM and creative arts skills into a cohesive and hands-on learning experience.

Looking for something to do this summer? Maine Maritime Museum is searching for new volunteers to serve fun and exciting roles for the 2021 season. With outdoor, indoor, and independent opportunities available, the museum has offerings to suit everyone’s interests. Museum staff will deliver full training courses both in-person and remotely, so there’s no prior experience necessary. Volunteering at Maine Maritime Museum is a fun way to make new friends, learn new skills, and give back to the community. Interested new volunteers will gain free admission to our shipyard to experience all that our volunteer opportunities offer. Current volunteers will provide outdoor tours, demonstrations, and presentations that showcase their roles and explain what makes MMM such a great place to serve. Making Sail: Canvas Ditty Bags

Made primarily of sailcloth, a sailor's ditty bag was crafted using all the techniques essential to the art of Sailmaking. Join Mike Bartles, co-owner of M&H Bartles, Sailmakers, to explore the fundamental hand-work that once drove the world's commerce across the globe as you create your very own canvas ditty bag. Learn how to stich, sew and splice with an experienced sailmaker, catching a glimpse of the trade as it was practiced throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Mike Bartles learned the fundamentals of sailmaking during his time at Mystic Seaport Museum and went on to lead the maintenance of the museum's sails. In 2013, Mike joined the crew of Nathaniel Wilson's sail loft where he had the opportunity to work on a suit of sails for the Charles W. Morgan restoration. Mike opened his own sail loft, M&H Bartles, Sailmaking, in 2018 in Boothbay Harbor. Workshop will be held in Maine Maritime Museum's Boatshop. Capacity is limited to 12 participants. Masks are required.

Creative Writing with Ship Logs and Sea Journals

From shipwrecks and piracy to foreign ports and the wide open sea, the experiences of those who lived aboard sailing vessels have inspired some of the best fiction in American history. In this two-hour workshop we will look closely at a selection of ship logs and sailors' journals from Maine Maritime Museum's collection, using our imaginations to give these first-hand accounts new life. Coupled with the backdrop of the historic shipyard and the remnants of the clipper ship, Snow Squall, these journals will inspire children and adults alike to create a piece of writing based on maritime journeys long ago. Participants will have the opportunity to share their writing with the group in a positive workshop setting. All ages are welcome--content level is appropriate for ages 5+. Plein-Air Painting in the Shipyard

It's School Vacation Week! Join the Education Team with a relaxing afternoon of painting outside in the shipyard. Many artists use Maine’s shipyards and waterways as inspiration for their canvas. We provide the canvas, the views, and the paint – you provide the creativity! Need some inspiration? Education staff will be on hand to provide information on some of Maine’s famous artists. This program is included with museum admission; while supplies last.

Empty Hand, Empty Brush: A Calligraphy Workshop

Countless mariners sailed on Bath-built ships around the world including trips through Asia. They returned with items of cultural significance to display in their homes, to give as gifts and to commemorate their adventures, thus introducing Eastern art forms such as traditional calligraphy in the west. We will explore how this has continued to evolve and merge with contemporary art concepts into exciting and dynamic new forms. This workshop will demonstrate how East-West calligraphy is a type of meditation and also a discipline in centering--starting from the correct postural alignment of the spine, to preparing calligraphic ink, holding the brush correctly as an extension of the arm and executing brush strokes in oneness. Learn how to sense your internal energy through Qi-Gong and Tai Chi exercises and apply this awareness to free-flowing calligraphic art, besides demonstrating traditional Eastern calligraphic paintings. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to integrate mindfulness and creative expression. Experienced artists and beginners welcome! For those who wish to do brush work during the workshop, rice paper, brushes, ink stone and sticks are available for an additional modest fee.
