Spend time in our Boatshop and learn how to make a set of oars out of coastal Maine spruce. We teach a simple yet elegant design that is functional and worthy of display. No experience is necessary as we will walk you through the steps and tools required to complete this project. You will use traditional hand tools including spokeshaves and draw knives and finish the oars with traditional leatherwork. The fun doesn't stop at the end of this class because you’ll get to take home a set of oars that you can use for years to come! The Shakers are famous for their simple and elegant designs, and the Shaker oval box is no exception. Over two evenings in the Boatshop, you’ll build a set of three nesting oval boxes using boatbuilding techniques such as clinch nailing and steam bending. No experience is required; this class is a fantastic introduction to woodworking. Boxes are made from cherry and cedar, and all materials are provided. Bath resident and professional photographer Benjamin Williamson will share a variety of images, mostly local scenes, and the stories behind them. A lifelong fascination with weather and nature combined with a keen interest in man-made landscapes and human stories have resulted in a catalog of images that capture Maine at its most beautiful, sometimes terribly so. His photos have graced the covers and pages of many issues of Down East Magazine, where he was the photo editor and staff photographer for the last 6 years.

Over 1,300 ships have wrecked off the coast of Maine, each with a story of danger, adventure, heroism, and tragedy. Explore our immersive “Shipwrecks and Salvage” exhibit to understand the technologies, risks, and preservation efforts involved in maritime archaeology, then dive into our historic shipyard to search for clues and solve the mystery of the wreck of an actual Maine Vessel. All ages welcome.

This solid three-legged pine stool has no fasteners and is held together only with tight joinery (and a lick of wood glue). It is perfect for sitting by the fire, working in the home shop, or as a perch for your cat. No woodworking experience is necessary to build this beautiful and functional work of art -- over 200 have been built by our 5th to 8th-grade boatbuilding students. During your visit, drop by the museum history building for a 15-mniute lesson with one of our museum educators! Appropriate for the whole family. In this program, visitors will be learning basic anatomy and adaptations of the whales that we see in the Gulf of Maine. They will also learn why the Gulf of Maine draws whales to feed every summer, and how they are connected in the Gulf of Maine food web.
During your visit, drop by the museum history building for a 15-mniute lesson with one of our museum educators! Appropriate for the whole family. In this program, visitors will be interacting with a model as they learn about the benefits of salt marshes as well as impacts of human activity and pollution on different water ecosystems.
