Unfurl: A Virtual Symposium for Undertold Maritime Voices

Maritime history and culture is rich and complex; preserved and interpreted by many prominent collecting and cultural institutions across the globe. And yet, the stories of Black mariners, the changing environment, and the indigenous peoples on whose land these institutions occupy are simultaneously rich and underrepresented. These vital stories better contextualize the present day and provide avenues for additional scholarship and research into our shared maritime heritage. As one step toward telling more inclusive stories, Maine Maritime Museum has organized an online symposium as a platform for scholars to share their work on these important topics. Invited speakers investigate and give voice to these undertold maritime stories that advance our socio-political, environmental, and economic understanding of the maritime world, past and present. Presentations include: New England Native Mariners of the 18th and 19th Century: Life on the Docks Chris Newell, Director of Education, Akomawt Educational Initiative, Former Director of the Abbe Museum Coastal Foodways and African American Maritime Heritage Kim Long, Scholar in Residence for Digital and Cultural Engagement, Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC and Executive Director of The Lowcountry Rice Culture Project John Brown Russwurm (1799-1851): A Black Atlantic Leader Forged in Maine C. Patrick Burrowes, Ph.D., Historian and Retired University Administrator   This online event is FREE with a suggested minimum donation of $10. Thank you for supporting Maine Maritime Museum !

Artist Workshop: Letter Boxes

Maine Maritime Museum 243 Washington St, Bath, ME

In celebration of print media featured in Broadside: The Power of Print in the Maritime World, join Portland-based print artist Crystal Cawley in a hands-on workshop transforming 2D paper into 3D sculpture. Paper can be manipulated in many ways to create 3-D structures – for example by cutting, rolling, gluing, and stitching. Using letterpress patterned papers and linen thread, workshop participants will create one of the simplest forms – a cylindrical box with a fitted lid. Crystal Cawley is an artist who works with paper, textiles, collected objects, and re-purposed materials. Her work explores ideas of identity, time, memory, and loss, and draws on various traditional skills like embroidery and letterpress printing. She teaches in the Continuing Studies program at the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, and is an artist member of Portland's Pickwick Independent Press, a printmaking collective. She has shown her work around the US and in England, Greece, and Japan. Her work is in the collections of the Boston Public Library; Columbia University Library; The Library of Congress; Maine Women Writers Collection; MOMA/Franklin Furnace Artists’ Book Collection; the Smithsonian Institution Graphic Arts Collection at the National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.; and the Munakata Shiko Museum, Aomori, Japan, among others. She has received grants from the Maine Arts Commission, the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, and the Pollock Krasner Foundation. $18 members; $23 nonmembers Price includes all materials and museum admission

Book Signing with Nathan Lipfert

Maine Maritime Museum 243 Washington St, Bath, ME

Join us in Long Reach Hall to celebrate the release of Two Centuries of Maine Shipbuilding; A Visual History by historian Nathan Lipfert, curator emeritus. Nathan will read from the new book and sign copies, which will be available for sale. Celebrating the bicentennial of Maine, Two Centuries of Maine Shipbuilding explores the rich history of Maine shipbuilding. Though concentrating primarily on shipbuilding activity in the two centuries since statehood, the book begins with pre-1820 activity, including native canoe-making and colonial-period shipbuilding. Covering the entire coast, this rich visual history focuses on the industry and the vessels produced, highlighting Maine’s national and international importance in shipbuilding.
