Come explore the microscopic world of plankton. The basis of our food web and responsible, in part, for the air we breathe, these microscopic organisms can be found in the waters of the Kennebec. Learn how to collect them and find them under a microscope. Then, use your knowledge to create you own plankton model in a race to the bottom.

Join us at the Maine Maritime Museum and learn to weave a recycled lobster line (rope) doormat with Kerin of Cape Porpoise Trading Company. This workshop will be held outdoors along the beautiful Kennebec River. Turn old lobster line into an eco-friendly, handmade (by you) mat for your home! These rugs are great for indoor or outdoor use. All weaving material is retired line used by Maine lobstermen.

Our historic shipyard on the banks of the Kennebec River serves as a delightful backdrop for a one-day class! The iconic Adirondack chair, built from lightweight and durable cedar, comes together quickly and easily under the supervision of Boatshop staff. Hundreds of these chairs have
been built at the museum by all ages and skill levels—no experience is necessary and all tools, jigs, and materials are provided! Bring a lunch or grab a bite from the Sail Shed. Don’t miss this popular summer workshop!

Our three-legged fireside stool is simple, yet elegant, completed over two evenings. It’s a great introduction to woodworking—in fact, it is the first project every student undertakes in our Discovery Boatbuilding program. Comprised of three octagonal legs that are fastened with wedged, kerfed through-tenons, this stool is a great introduction to boatbuilding techniques on a smaller scale. It is perfect for sitting by the fire, working in the home shop, or a plant stand. No woodworking (or boatbuilding) experience necessary!

Rozalia Project’s mission is to clean and protect the ocean and conserve a healthy, thriving marine ecosystem. Launched in 2010, the project focuses on addressing the problem of marine debris in a unique and action-based way using a combination of restoration (cleanups), prevention through education, embracing technology and innovation and by conducting solutions-based research.
