Discovery Boatbuilding: 15 Years of Woolwich Central School Boatbuilding

This exhibit celebrates to 15 years of Discovery Boatbuilding at Woolwich Central School, one of the area schools we partner with on this program.

Every year, students in grades 7 and 8 from Woolwich Central School leave their school once a week to join together for a new challenge: woodworking and traditional boatbuilding at Maine Maritime Museum.

The first semester consists solely of individual projects designed to familiarize and allow students practice with introductory hand tool joinery, plus basic boatbuilding techniques and vocabulary. Students are in the shop roughly 50 hours before they focus on the actual boatbuilding. This luxury benefits both students and teachers: Proficiency with tools on lower-stakes take-home projects develops confidence and buy-in, which are necessary when the focus shifts to creating a watertight object. Then, in the second semester, each class then builds two boats. The program culminates in a public boat launch, attended by classmates, teachers, school administration, parents, museum staff, volunteers, and board members.
