Maine Maritime Museum is pleased to offer our curriculum of woodworking projects for home school students!

Upcoming Classes

Our next classes will explore various aspects of woodworking & boatbuilding. All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided. Staff and volunteer instructors will provide instruction, guidance, experience, and motivation.

Thursdays, 1:00–3:00 pm

Ages 9–18

Cost: $160

Upcoming sessions beginning on December 3, and through 2027. Each session is 4 weeks.

Students are required to follow the Boatshop dress code: Pants, close-toed shoes, and the ability to tie one’s hair back when necessary, if applicable.

Please dress warmly, the Boatshop normally stays at 60 degrees. Make-up time can be scheduled in the event of inclement weather or special circumstances; there will be no refunds for absences.

Introducing Homeschool Days!

Maine Maritime Museum is excited to host dedicated Homeschool Days on November 6, January 8, and March 5.

Each day will include 2 “showings” of the day’s educational offerings: an earlier program for younger children (ages 5–8), 9:30–11:00 am and a later program for older children (ages 9–12), 11:30–1:00 pm.

Programs topics may include:

  • Upon That Isle in Maine: Writing and Illustrating Stories like Chris Van Dusen

  • Wabanaki Waterways: Technology and Culture

  • Lobstering & the Maine Coast

  • How to Build a Wooden Vessel

  • Shipwreck Detectives: Marine Archaeology

  • Q: I have children in both age groups (5-8 and 9-12). Can all of my children attend one session together?

    A: Yes! Choose which session works best for your children and your schedule, but be aware that our educators will have adapted vocabulary, pacing, historical detail, etc. in each lesson for its age group.   

    Q: My child is a few years older than the older session’s age range (>12). Can I still sign them up?

    A: Yes. 

    Q: Can I leave my child at the museum for the program and pick them up after the lesson concludes?

    A: We ask that all child participants have an adult on campus in case of emergency. Feel free to arrange carpools or designate one adult from your homeschooling group to be the contact for all child participants. However, we are not providing childcare during these lessons and need each child to have a contact adult on site.

    Q: Will adults participate in the lesson with their children? Are they required to participate/observe the lesson?

    A: The lessons that we’ll be teaching on Homeschool Days are geared towards groups of 10-25 children. While adults are welcome to observe, we don’t have active roles for parent/guardian adults to play. Feel free to observe, or check out our other exhibits! We just ask that each child participant has an adult on campus in case of emergency.
