Upon That Isle in Maine: The Story & Works of Chris Van Dusen | Now on View!
Part of a long tradition of authors and illustrators along the Maine coast, Chris Van Dusen captivates readers’ imaginations with playful and heartfelt stories inspired by the history, culture, and natural wonder of the Pine Tree State. This exhibit, the first to showcase Van Dusen’s original artwork in a dedicated museum setting, will bring to life his lovable characters and scenes that drift within fantastical realms while unmistakably anchored in the familiar charm of Maine.

Big Truck, Little Island
Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee
What else can families do at Maine Maritime Museum?
In the spring, all of our exhibits and demonstrations open until Indigenous People’s Day in October. Kids and the young-at-heart can enjoy our expansive campus for running around and playing, whether that’s to the Pirate Play Ship, the Tug Boat Pilot House Replica, or their own play lobster shack in Lobstering & The Maine Coast.
It’s not just about interactive elements, kids can also meet our interpretive volunteers, who will answer questions and demonstrate blacksmithing, wood carving, ship launching, and more!
When is Maine Maritime Museum Open?
Cruise Aboard the Merrymeeting
We’re open every day of the week from 9:30 am–5:00 pm! Children 17 & under get free admission, and complimentary passes can be borrowed at many local libraries in Maine.
We also participate in reciprocal admission through the Council of American Maritime Museums and the North American Reciprocal Museum program. Through Museums for All and Blue Star Museums, active military families and those receiving SNAP or food stamp benefits also receive free admission

A day at Maine Maritime Museum wouldn’t be complete without a trip aboard the Merrymeeting. Our 50-passenger tour boat cruises around Kennebec River around Bath, and it’s not unusual to see some very cool birds of prey including osprey and bald eagles, cormorants, and even sometimes seals! We’ll also go under the Carlton Bridge, featured in an iconic episode of Sesame Street!
