Oysters are not only the newest trend in Maine aquaculture, many oyster farms in this area are small and/or women owned businesses. These bivalves are not only a sustainable food source that help Maine’s oceans, but lean protein that is just as delicious raw as they are cooked.
On this tour around the Sasanoa River through some of Maine’s most gorgeous tidal waterways, attendees with learn about oyster farming from some of Maine’s premier oyster growers. Learn how oysters are cultivated, harvested, and taken to market, and discover why the watersheds where they are grown impact their flavor. Our recommendation? Try the first one or two without lemon or mignonette, chewing three or four times to release the flavor; then add accouterments to your heart’s desire.
Each attendee will receive a ticket for a dozen oysters on the half-shell and a beverage of choice, including selections from our beer and wine list. Additional oysters can be purchased aboard for $3 each. Tickets for ages 6 & under include ½ dozen oysters and a beverage.
All of this from the comfort of our 50-passenger tour boat, Merrymeeting. These cruises are not only accessible by manual wheelchairs, snacks and adult beverages are available for purchase on board. Folks are also welcome to bring their own picnics, or enjoy a pizza along the waterfront at Flight Deck Pizza & Beer Garden before departing. Parking at Maine Maritime Museum is free and easy, with a spacious parking lot, drop-off circle, and plenty of spots to accommodate Handicap plates and electric vehicles.
