“As Fun As Possible:” The Making of Upon That Isle in Maine: The Story & Works of Chris Van Dusen

When we first presented exhibit design ideas to children’s book author Chris Van Dusen, Chris replied that he’d like the show to be “as fun as possible.” This presentation explains the process behind an exhibit designed to engage all ages in as much fun as could be crammed into a gallery. Attendees will learn how preliminary trips to Chris Van Dusen’s studio inspired a spatial design that both engages visitors in the artistic process and immerses them in the magic of imagination. Just as Chris openly shared unused drafts and sketches to be used in the exhibit, this presentation will reveal the behind-the-scenes exhibit-development process, including preliminary concepts, discarded prototypes, and foundational goals that guided the work. Best of all, the author and illustrator himself will join for the talk and tour!

Luke Gates-Milardo is Director of Exhibits & Learning at Maine Maritime Museum. Luke curated the exhibition Upon That Isle in Maine: The Story & Works of Chris Van Dusen and co-curated Re|Sounding; directs the coordination, design, and fabrication of exhibits; and oversees the museum’s educational programming. He holds a certificate in Exhibition Design from Pratt Institute, a bachelor of arts in English and Education from Bowdoin College, and a Maine State teaching certificate.
