Unfortunately, only service animals are allowed on the historic shipyard.
The south side of our campus is open for dog walks complete with a poop station, and Bath also has an excellent dog park just up the road called the South End Park.

This is a 21+ event. Exceptions can be made for babies in strollers; children who have learned to walk (and potentially run away) should stay home.
Every day, museum admission is free for children 17 & under, so please be sure to come back with kids! We also offer family-friendly events throughout the year: free STEAM workshops during the school year, interactive exhibit elements, and summer day camps.

Explorers Sketchbooks with Watercolor and Ink | Claire Loon Baldwin
This workshop is great for ages 9 and up, (Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult).
We'll learn about the tradition of explorer's sketchbooks throughout history, and how scientists, artists, and explorers were one and the same. Students will start by learning to mix colors of natural specimens with watercolor pencil, and advance to learning techniques for traditional "dip pens" and ink.
By the workshop's end, you'll have unique watercolor pencil and ink illustrations of your adventures (both real and imagined) and an understanding of how to capture the colors of the Maine coastline.

Learn techniques for illustrating Maine's beautiful seaweeds with watercolor and ink! Students will learn about the seaweeds of Maine, and utilize color theory for capturing the unique hues with watercolor. We'll also explore techniques for traditional 'dip pens' and ink.

Maine Maritime Museum welcomes Maria Salcines from Fogwood Gardens and a team of floral artists to create floral installations using local flowers, sustainable mechanics, and native plants growing right here on our landscape. A walk around the historic shipyard will reveal arrangements built to honor Maine’s history and culture by using props such as old lobster traps. We will also highlight how sustainable floristry impacts the quality of our environments, supports Maine’s small farms and connects people to the plants. Flowers bring people together, so let’s celebrate the turn of the season as a community on this unique Maine waterfront.
Self-guided tours of the floral installations are included with museum admission.
Blacksmith Workshop: Marlinspike
Join Journeyman blacksmith Beth Holmberg for a hands-on half day introductory workshop in the Kenneth D. Kramer blacksmith shop in the historic Percy & Small Shipyard. Perfect for beginners, participants will learn how blacksmithing was an integral part of historic wooden shipbuilding while practicing basic techniques. Learn to use hammer and tongs to forge a marlinspike, a traditional tool used by sailors to loosen knots and splice ropes. Based on an item from the museum’s collection, marlinspikes are still in use today, including by the museum’s own Merrymeeting crew! Take home a unique souvenir and a practical tool.
All materials and safety equipment are provided. Intended for ages 18 and up. Admission to Maine Maritime Museum, good for two days, included with the workshop.

Participants must wear 100% natural fiber clothing that fully covers legs and closed toe shoes. Natural fibers include cotton, linen, hemp, and wool.

Create your own bouquet using locally grown flowers! Each participant will receive a bucket of blooms containing a balanced recipe of foliage, filler, and focal flowers. Maria will show you how to use the spiral technique to build bouquets with structure, drama, and intentional color.
Maria Salcines of Fogwood Gardens is a floral artist and flower grower who creates seasonally inspired floral sculptures that tell a story. She designs with bold color, offerings from the landscapes, and the belief that flowers have a language of their own. She honors her stewardship to the land by using sustainable, reusable mechanics, and locally grown or foraged blooms. Maria believes that people are meant to gather around flowers, and that they can be repurposed into different art forms. Through various preservation techniques, Maria encourages people to spend more time with flowers and enjoy them at all stages.

Drawing on conversations with flower growers throughout Maine, this presentation from Dr. Ankit Singh offers a behind-the-scenes look at the state’s vibrant flower farming industry. Attendees will learn about the seasonal rhythms, market opportunities, labor demands, climate challenges, and community connections that influence local flower production. Featuring stories and photographs from farms across Maine, the session highlights the people, practices, and passion behind Maine-grown flowers.
Dr. Ankit Kumar Singh is an Assistant Extension Professor with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, where his work focuses on specialty crop production, controlled environment agriculture, and sustainable horticultural systems. Through extensive engagement with flower growers across Maine, his research and Extension programs explore the opportunities and challenges of farming in northern climates, including seasonality, labor, markets, and climate resilience. In parallel, Dr. Singh collaborates on research in space agriculture, investigating how lessons from extreme growing environments, from greenhouses in Maine to plant production systems designed for space, can help advance the future of sustainable agriculture on Earth. His expertise has been featured by NPR, Maine Public Radio, NBC10 Boston, Martha Stewart Magazine, and the 2026 Old Farmer’s Almanac.

She has a B.S. in Environmental Horticulture and a 400 hour certificate in community herbalism from the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine and has taught at Haystack School of Crafts and shown work during the Venice Biennale.

Perils of the Percy & Small Shipyard (In-person & via Zoom)
The Percy & Small Shipyard at Maine Maritime Museum was part of an industrial center of shipbuilding in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. While the shipyard is currently located on a site of relaxation and learning, this presentation by Allie Travers, Manager of Education, will take attendees back in time to the years of Percy & Small’s operation, when it was the site of both heavy labor and subsequent tragedy. Attendees will learn the most common causes and impacts of shipyard injuries and deaths through statistics and true human stories recovered from newspaper accounts from the time that these events took place.
This free lecture is open to the public, and will be held in-person and on Zoom. Preregistration is required.
Allie Travers is the Manager of Education at Maine Maritime Museum. Allie manages the development, facilitation, and evaluation of the museum’s educational programming and has a professional background in education in classroom and early childhood facility settings. She holds a bachelor of science degree in Early Childhood Education from Towson University and a Maine State teaching certificate.

Witch Cakes & Poppets: The Folk Magic of Salem
In 1692, the Village of Salem feared witchcraft to the point of persecution and execution of their friends and neighbors. They believed that magic was only possible through the help of demons, and yet many members of the community still engaged with folk magic in their daily lives.
In this class, we will learn all about the folk magic that occurred in Salem during this era, including witch cakes, poppets, oomancy, and more. We'll explore the origins of these traditions, investigate how they came into play during the Salem Witch Trials, and practice a 17th-century form of divination together. Expect to hear a few connections between Maine and these infamous trials along the way.

Maya Rook is the history teacher you wish you had! She is a cultural historian, college educator, and the creator of Firefly Studio and the popular Full Moon Gathering series at the Maine Maritime Museum. Maya holds an MA in American Cultural History and teaches history and humanities courses with Southern New Hampshire University. In her public history talks, she loves to explore a range of popular and obscure historical topics. In this presentation, attendees will learn details about the planning, construction, and operation of the longest wooden vessel ever built, and the shipyard that launched it. Anecdotes of its builders and crew will add personal flavor, emphasizing the people who made Wyoming possible. These human stories complement vessel engineering and construction, contextualizing the industry within broader social, cultural, and environmental perspectives.

Writing Home: Ekphrasis, Image-Making, and Poetic Forms
In conjunction with Re|Sounding, now on view, join Maine Maritime Museum this spring and summer for an artist workshop and lecture series. Each month from May through August, we are hosting a different contributing artist for a unique learning experience, each examining art as a tool for exploring histories, and uncovering how historical and cultural contexts can influence art.
Each of the four artists leading these interdisciplinary workshops will bring a distinctive approach to exploring both local and personal histories through art. Come learn more about their individual craft and get a better glimpse inside their process, before practicing it yourself!
This generative workshop expands on the lecture by inviting participants to write poems that explore “Home” as place, inheritance, memory, imagined return, and the personal archives we carry (photos, objects, documents, and stories). Using ekphrastic methods (writing in response to art and objects) as a doorway into imagery, we’ll practice “writing what we see” while also noticing what’s missing, unnamed, or unrecorded, and how a poem can hold those gaps with care. Participants will create poems sparked by visual prompts (artworks, photographs, or objects), short sensory exercises, and guided observation, designed to make the early stages of drafting feel less rare and more accessible. We’ll also experiment with a range of forms that help shape memory into music and meaning, including:
Haiku (attention, brevity, the weather of a moment)
Sonnet (argument, devotion, turning points)
Palindrome / reversible structures (echo, return, mirror—useful for writing the way “home” can repeat and change)
Activities include: rapid “image-to-line” drills, a sensory map of home (sounds, textures, objects, light), collaborative metaphor-building, and a form “remix” where writers translate the same scene across different structures to see how form reshapes feeling and story. The workshop closes with optional sharing to support confidence and community, and it can flow naturally into an open mic/showcase for those who want to read new work aloud.
Audience: All levels welcome; no prior poetry experience needed. Participants are encouraged to bring a family photo or a small meaningful item/object from home to use as an ekphrastic prompt.
Participants leave with: Multiple new drafts, a set of reusable prompts, and practical tools for generating vivid imagery and revising with intention.
Workshop attendees are also welcome to come early for a lecture from Summer from 10:00–11:00 am. Museum admission is included with registration. There will also be a culminating workshop exhibition and open mic in the gallery from 3:30–5:00 pm.

Her creative and scholarly work draws on research related to Malaga Island, including the ways dispossession and institutional archives shape what can be remembered, recorded, and recovered. She has published in various literary journals and is an adjunct professor at CT State Community Colleges. Summer holds a BA from Bay Path University, a Master's in English Education from UConn, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Fairfield University. She is currently a PhD candidate in American Literature at Howard University.

Each month from May through August, we are hosting a different contributing artist for a unique learning experience, each examining art as a tool for exploring histories, and uncovering how historical and cultural contexts can influence art.
What do we do when history goes quiet? When the archive is fragmented, distorted, or built to erase? In this lecture, Malaga Island descendant and poet-scholar Summer Tate introduces Ethical Fabulation as a creative method for writing into archival silence with care, restraint, and accountability. Drawing on research into dispossession and institutional narratives, where entire communities can be rendered as “case files” or reduced to euphemism, Tate explores how writing can hold what cannot be verified, while resisting the urge to “solve” the past through spectacle or narrative mastery.
Moving between examples, craft discussion, and generative prompts, participants will learn how writers can ethically approach lived histories and inherited stories: how to listen for what’s missing, how to write with gaps rather than simply filling them, and how form, image, sound, and line breaks can become tools for honoring complexity. The talk also opens up Tate’s creative process, how poems begin, how research enters the lyric, and how revision becomes an ethical practice as much as an artistic one.
Audience: Writers of all levels, readers, and anyone interested in history, memory, and imagination.
Takeaway: Participants leave with a flexible set of strategies for writing poems that are grounded, vivid, and ethically attentive to what the record cannot fully contain.

Keeping a Logbook (In-person & via Zoom)
Logbooks provide essential information in understanding daily life at sea during the age of sail. In this presentation by Kaylie Borden O’Brien, we’ll learn how these documents often serve as the sole account of voyages across oceans and to distant lands, and are rich sources of data on wind, weather, and adversity.
However, logbooks can also contain surprising glimpses of a deeper human story. Attendees will journey through time using logbooks kept by Maine and New England mariners, examining everything from beautiful (and humorous) logbook artwork to the work historians are doing today to uncover evidence of human trafficking through the study of antebellum logs.
This free lecture is open to the public, and will be held in-person and on Zoom. Preregistration is required.

Artist Workshop: Nyugen Smith
In conjunction with Re|Sounding, now on view, join Maine Maritime Museum this spring and summer for an artist workshop and lecture series. Each month from May through August, we are hosting a different contributing artist for a unique learning experience, each examining art as a tool for exploring histories, and uncovering how historical and cultural contexts can influence art. The four mediums explored throughout this workshop series are painting, oral storytelling, assemblage, and poetry.
Inspired by Bundlehouse FS No. 12 (Garvey Aight), currently on view in Re|Sounding at the Maine Maritime Museum, this hands-on workshop invites participants to design and create their own commemorative medals inspired by Marcus Garvey's UNIA Redemption Medal. Garvey's medal symbolized leadership, self-determination, and the collective pursuit of freedom, offering recognition to those committed to building stronger communities.
Using a variety of accessible materials, participants will create a medal honoring someone who embodies the spirit of freedom-making. This may be a family member, community leader, ancestor, historical figure, or an unsung individual whose courage, resilience, generosity, or vision has positively shaped the lives of others. Participants are also encouraged to consider lesser-known individuals whose contributions have enriched Maine's maritime history and traditions, expanding our understanding of who is remembered and why.
The workshop begins with a brief introduction to Marcus Garvey's UNIA Redemption Medal and its relationship to Bundlehouse FS No. 12 (Garvey Aight), followed by a discussion about the role of symbols, monuments, and acts of recognition in preserving collective memory. Through making, conversation, and storytelling, participants will reflect on the people whose contributions often remain overlooked while imagining new forms of commemoration rooted in care, resilience, and community.
No previous art-making experience is necessary. All materials will be provided.
Workshop attendees are also welcome to come early for a lecture from Nyugen from 1:00–2:00 pm. Museum admission is included with registration.

Nyugen holds a BA, Fine Art from Seton Hall University and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been presented at the Museum of Latin American Art, Peréz Art Museum, Museum of Cultural History, Norway, Frist Art Museum, Blanton Museum, Newark Museum, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others. Carried by Water: Memory, Migration, and Afro-Diasporic World-Building
Water is both a material reality and a conceptual framework within Nyugen E. Smith's interdisciplinary practice. It functions as a site of migration, exchange, loss, survival, and renewal, serving as a connective force that links people, places, and histories across the African Diaspora. In this lecture, Smith explores water as the connective element across his interdisciplinary practice, revealing how it links his sculptures, mixed-media drawings, conceptual mapping projects, assemblages, and performances into an evolving investigation of memory, migration, and Afro-diasporic world-building.
Smith's use of found materials, speculative architectures, ritual forms, and an evolving symbolic language considers how communities navigate displacement while preserving cultural knowledge and creating new possibilities for belonging. Water functions as both a witness to histories of the transatlantic slave trade, migration, and climate change, and an active participant in Afro-diasporic traditions of freedom-making, resilience, and world-building.
Drawing on more than two decades of research, travel, and collaborations across the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and North America, Smith reflects on how these experiences have shaped his practice, informing what he describes as an ecology of memory, a framework in which histories, materials, and cultural knowledge remain in motion. Rather than understanding water as a boundary, Carried by Water proposes it as a living archive and connective medium through which past and present converge. By following these currents, the lecture offers a perspective on world-building rooted in relation, care, and the continual remaking of home.

Trivia at Flight Deck Pizza & Beer Garden
Join Maine Maritime Museum for trivia at Flight Deck Pizza & Beer Garden on Thursday, July 16 beginning at 6:00 pm.
Winners will take home tickets for a cruise aboard Merrymeeting, our 50-passenger tour boat. Bring your team of 4-6 players and your game face! Trivia will be Maine-flavored and maritime-flavored but by no means requires deep knowledge of maritime history.
Trivia is hosted by Museum Education Specialist Kaylie Borden O’Brien. Kaylie designs and delivers education programming to museum visitors of all ages and has a professional background in alternative and experiential education in classrooms and on tall ships. She holds a Master of Science in Education degree from Saint Joseph’s College and Bachelor of Arts degrees in history and political science from the University of Idaho, as well as Maine State teaching certification and a 100-ton captain’s license.
New Moon Magic with Maya & Tara
Tickets will be available at the door!
Join sisters Maya and Tara Rook for a special evening of meditation with sound and energy healing as we tune into this nurturing New Moon in Cancer and gaze out on the waters of the Kennebec River.
Expect to be guided through gentle flowing movements, ground in meditation, and be held by original ambient soundscapes and crystal singing bowls. Participants will receive a brief experience of Reiki with hands-on assist as we take time to rest and reset in community during this reflective moment in the lunar cycle.
Bring a yoga mat/cushion to rest on the floor or opt to sit in a provided chair.
All ages welcome.

Maya Rook, creator of Firefly Studio, loves creating space for community to come together on potent moments in the lunar cycle each month to explore whatever energy is currently arising. These sessions are informed by her experiences as a yoga and meditation, practitioner of natural magic and Buddhism, and work as a cultural historian. Participants have described Maya’s approach to moon gatherings as welcoming, magical, creative, and grounding. After attending a gathering, you will walk away with a deeper connection to yourself and others, as well as fresh perspectives in how you view the world around you.
Tara Rook is an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York, whose work bridges the worlds of visual art, music, and mindfulness. She specializes in pen illustration, graphic design, and electronic music production, performing and releasing music under the moniker Just Milk. Rooted in a lifelong devotion to meditation and the creative process, Tara’s journey weaves together art, sound, curation, travel, and spiritual guidance. As an energy worker and dedicated meditation and movement teacher, she helps others cultivate presence and a sense of safety in body, mind, and heart. Through her projects—Tara Rook Studios and Love Land—she integrates the arts and mindfulness through illustration, music, and immersive workshops, envisioning both a physical and virtual sanctuary for creative wellness. Tara has collaborated with Portland Yoga Collective, Firefly Studio, Commune, Anima Mundi Herbals, Sound Mind Center, and Reforesters Laboratoryon initiatives spanning meditation, energy work, and creative healing.

Start your day with us at Maine Maritime Museum for an interactive story time! Join a museum educator and Splash, the friendly sea monster, as they introduce you to the wonders of Maine traditions, wildlife, and maritime themes.
Weaving Workshop on the Water
Join Kerin, owner of Cape Porpoise Trading Company and discover the art of traditional rope weaving with a sustainable twist in this workshop along the beautiful Kennebec River. In this unique experience, participants will use colorful, weather worn lobster rope once used by local lobstermen, to create a sturdy and eye-catching doormat.
This hands-on workshop blends practical skills with a meaningful environmental mission: giving new life to marine waste while celebrating Maine's working waterfront heritage. All ages welcome, cost is $125/person, each one hour session has two available slots. Perfect for crafters, ocean lovers, and anyone interested in maritime culture, come connect with Maine's coastal traditions and leave with a handmade piece of functional art! All materials are provided and no experience is necessary.

The Watertown Treaty of 1776: A Wabanaki Perspective
On July 19, 1776, only two weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the United States signed its first international treaty. The Watertown Treaty of 1776 was a treaty of alliance and friendship between the Second Continental Congress and the Wolastoqey and Mi’kmaq Nations. Come listen to Osihkiyol Crofton-Macdonald, Tribal Ambassador for the Houlton Band of Maliseets, explain the treaty's significance from the Wabanaki perspective.
This free event is co-presented with Atlantic Black Box and Patten Free Library, with funding from Maine State Library's Revolutionary Maine Commemoration Grant. Preregistration is required.
About the Speaker
Osihkiyol (Zeke) Crofton-Macdonald is a Wolastoqey person from the Houlton Band of Maliseets in Maine (Metaksonekiyik) and the Oromocto First Nation (Welamukotuk) in New Brunswick Canada. Zeke has spent his life advocating for Native rights in the United States and Canada. He is currently serving as the Tribal Ambassador for the Houlton Band of Maliseets in Maine. He serves as the President of the Wabanaki Alliance and as a Tribal Commissioner for the Houlton Band on the Maine Indian Tribal State Commission. Zeke graduated from the University of Maine in 2015 where he received degrees in History and Political Science and is attending graduate school at the University of New Brunswick where he studies History. He is working on a master’s thesis on Wabanaki Treaty History.

Alongside a museum educator and Splash, the friendly sea monster, children's book author Chris Van Dusen will join to share one of his stories inspired by Maine! Splash the Sea Monster is joined by his friend, Chris Van Dusen, who will read one of his favorite stories. A book signing of the featured story will follow right after! This extra special Story Time is presented as part of the programming for our exhibit, Upon That Isle in Maine: The Story and Works of Chris Van Dusen.
