Artist Talk: The How and Why of Out of Time with Robert Beck

  • Maine Maritime Museum 243 Washington St Bath United States (map)

Out of Time by Robert Beck

Last year, Maine Maritime Museum acquired Out of Time, an oil painting by Robert Beck. It’s a grandiose image that speaks to the past, present, and future of our relationship to Maine’s waterways. This new 66” x 96” image is currently on display in Sewall Hall, just beyond the museum’s main entrance. On June 25, join us in welcoming Robert Beck to talk with us about his inspiration for and creation of this work of art. We will investigate where the image came from, and how did it get here? How does one make a painting like this?

Many of our members and visitors will remember Robert Beck’s solo exhibition in 2016, Over East, an extraordinary visual discourse centered on Downeast fishing villages. Robert’s work has been featured in three solo museum exhibitions and 32 solo gallery shows. He has also published more than 300 essays related to art, in addition to teaching, lecturing, and hosting a radio show.  He is regarded as an astute chronicler of our moment. Robert is known as an entertaining speaker, and we hope this will be a fun afternoon!
