Maine’s coastline has long been a place of fascination for explorers, scientists, and artists alike. Before photography, naturalists documented their discoveries through detailed hand-drawn illustrations. In this immersive three-hour workshop, you’ll learn the time-honored techniques for creating natural science illustrations with watercolor and ink.

Illustrator Claire Loon Baldwin will lead you through the process of sketching elements from nature and drawing with ink, using traditional dip pens. You’ll learn the fundamentals of color theory to accurately capture organic hues with watercolor. You’ll also learn about early explorers and artists, and ways to incorporate their approaches into your artistic practice.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a collection of your own watercolor and ink illustrations, a deeper understanding of Maine’s coastal environment, and new approaches for exploring your environment.
