This nature drawing workshop focuses on illustrating and painting fish. Scientific illustrator Karen Talbot will facilitate guided close observation of specimens (beautiful local mackerel!), while teaching some basic anatomy and morphology as well as principles of scientific illustration. Students will practice careful noticing to record both qualitative and quantitative information, sketch their specimens, and then have the opportunity to turn their sketches into paintings. Students will learn through instruction, demonstration and guided practice, and they will have the opportunity to try different watercolor techniques. All materials are included, and students will be able to take home a watercolor palette or a set of watercolor pencils, a set of three watercolor brushes, and hot-pressed watercolor paper. Class size is limited, so reserve your spot soon!

For many years, Karen has masterfully captured the fishes, birds and botanicals she encounters while traveling the world with sketchbook in hand. Karen's work is unique in that it possesses the detail of a scientific illustration, while, at the same time, presenting an aesthetically pleasing work of art that is as at home in a corporate office as it is in a streamside cabin. A diver, angler and hiker, Karen paints from nature in a variety of media, including watercolor, pen & ink, and acrylic. An ardent conservationist, Karen aims to educate through art, and a portion of all sales help conserve the wildlands, rivers and oceans that inspire her paintings. You can see more of her work at her website.
