As one of America’s premier maritime museums and stewards of the historic Schooner Mary E, we are committed to integrating workforce safety as part of our broader mission of connecting people to Maine’s waterways. By leveraging our relationships with the traditional sailing community, we can help safeguard crews, support Maine’s working sailing heritage, and commit to keeping traditional vessels and their crews safe and sustainable for generations to come.

In collaboration with SafetyWorks!, we are offering a free OSHA-10 Shipyard Standards safety training for mariners, traditional sailing vessel crews, and passenger vessel operators.

This two-day, 10-hour workshop will be held at Maine Maritime Museum, located in Bath, Maine. Participants will receive practical, applicable safety training and certificate of completion from an authorized OSHA trainer—at no cost.

The training includes a site visit to Derecktor Robinhood Marine Center to see the museum’s historic Schooner Mary E while in drydock. There, we will discuss common safety concerns faced by traditional sailing vessels during shipyard periods, including working around open hatches, temporary access, scaffolding, rigging, hazardous materials, going aloft, and coordination between vessel crews and shoreside workers.

Why Attend?

Shipyard work is among the most hazardous industrial environments, yet many traditional vessel crews enter these spaces with little or no formal safety training. This workshop bridges the gap between U.S. Coast Guard vessel regulations and OSHA shipyard safety standards, helping mariners and managers better understand risks and responsibilities during dockside and yard operations.

To support participation, Maine Maritime Museum will be offering this unique opportunity for FREE, including daily box lunches for participants. A limited number of lodging stipends are available for those needing overnight accommodations, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
